Home Office Wi-Fi: How to Make Your Connection Reliable for Video Calls

A dropped video call mid-presentation is frustrating. A pixelated, choppy call that makes you hard to understand is worse. For remote workers, a reliable video call connection isn’t a luxury — it’s a professional requirement. The good news is that most video call issues trace back to a handful of causes, and most of them are fixable.

What video calls actually need from your connection

Video calls are real-time, bidirectional, and sensitive to consistency. A download-heavy task like streaming Netflix can buffer a few seconds ahead and smooth over brief slowdowns. A video call can’t — every packet that arrives late or gets dropped shows up immediately as stuttering, frozen video, or degraded audio.

The specific requirements:

  • Download: 5–10 Mbps per call for HD quality (less for standard, more for multi-person gallery views)
  • Upload: 3–5 Mbps per call — often the tighter constraint, since most home internet plans have much lower upload speeds than download
  • Ping/latency: under 100ms for acceptable quality; under 50ms for smooth calls
  • Jitter: low variability in packet timing — this matters more than average latency

An internet plan with 200 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload sounds more than sufficient. In practice, if multiple people in the household are simultaneously on calls, streaming, or doing cloud backups, you can hit the upload ceiling surprisingly quickly.

Step 1: Move closer to the router, or vice versa

This sounds too simple. It works more often than anything else.

Wi-Fi signal strength drops off with distance and obstacles. A video call from a home office two rooms away from a router will perform less reliably than one from the same room. If you’re frequently on video calls, the most direct improvement is ensuring you’re getting strong Wi-Fi signal where you work.

Check your signal strength in that spot using a Wi-Fi analyzer app. If it’s below -70 dBm, you’re in marginal territory. Options: move the router (or add a mesh node) closer to your workspace, or move your workspace closer to the router if that’s practical.

Step 2: Use ethernet if you can

A wired ethernet connection eliminates the wireless variability that causes jitter. Wired connections don’t experience the interference events that cause brief dropouts in Wi-Fi. For a dedicated home office where video calls matter, a USB-C to ethernet adapter (for a modern laptop) or an ethernet cable run to the desk removes one of the most common sources of call quality issues.

If your office is near your router or a mesh node, this is the highest-leverage single change you can make. The adapter costs $15–25. The improvement in call stability is immediate and consistent.

Step 3: Prioritize call traffic with QoS

If your router supports Quality of Service, set your work laptop (or its MAC address) to the highest priority tier. This ensures that when your household is competing for bandwidth at 5pm, your call traffic gets served before the kids’ streaming and downloads.

Alternatively, if your router supports application-level QoS, prioritize traffic on the ports that video call platforms use. Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet all publish their network requirements and port ranges in their support documentation.

Step 4: Check your upload speed at the right time

Run a speed test specifically measuring upload speed, during the hours you typically have calls. Not at 2am — at your actual call time. Some ISP connections are significantly slower on upload in the evenings due to congestion. If your upload is consistently under 5 Mbps during call hours, that’s a plan or ISP issue rather than a home network issue.

If your upload is fine on a wired speed test but poor over Wi-Fi, the problem is the wireless connection between your device and the router.

Step 5: Close what you don’t need during calls

Cloud backup services (Dropbox, iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive) often run sync tasks that consume upload bandwidth in the background. Software updates download in the background. Streaming services on other tabs prefetch content. During a call, close or pause what you’re not actively using.

Many of these services have an option to throttle or pause during specific times or manually. Setting up a pre-call routine of pausing background sync takes thirty seconds and frees up bandwidth that your call then has available.

The checklist version

Before an important call:

  • Confirm you’re in good Wi-Fi coverage, or plugged in via ethernet
  • Close browser tabs, background apps, and cloud sync services
  • Run a quick speed test (Fast.com takes ten seconds) if you want assurance

For recurring issues:

  • Check router placement relative to your office
  • Add a mesh node if the office has consistently weak signal
  • Enable QoS on your router and prioritize your work device
  • Consider ethernet if you’re not using it

Most home office call problems are solvable with one of these steps. A combination of solid signal and a small QoS configuration handles the vast majority of cases without changing your internet plan or buying new hardware.
