Resolving Slow Upload Speeds on Mesh Networks During Video Calls

Video calls rely on a stable internet connection — and slow upload speeds on a mesh network are the most common culprit behind lagging video, frozen screens, and dropped calls. With the right adjustments, you can fix this without upgrading your broadband.

Why Upload Speeds Slow Down

Slow uploads during calls result from bandwidth sharing (streaming TVs and consoles competing for upload capacity), node distance (a far node has weaker backhaul), interference on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands, and absent QoS settings that let other traffic take priority over your calls.

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1: Measure Your Upload Speed

Visit Speedtest.net on your call device while connected to mesh. Note the upload figure — you need at least 2 Mbps minimum, ideally 5–10 Mbps for HD calls. Repeat the test during an active call to see the real-time drop.

Step 2: Reduce Network Load

Open your mesh app and list connected devices. Pause or turn off heavy users — 4K streaming TVs, gaming consoles, file uploaders — while on calls. Retest upload speed.

Step 3: Optimise Node Placement

Identify which node your call device connects to in the mesh app. Move that node closer to the device (10–15 feet, avoiding walls and metal objects) and elevate it on a shelf for better signal.

Step 4: Set Up QoS (Traffic Prioritization)

In the mesh app, find “QoS,” “Traffic Prioritization,” or “Device Priority.” Set your call device to high priority. Apply and retest during a call.

Step 5: Switch to 5 GHz

If your call device supports 5 GHz, connect it to the 5 GHz network (or force it via the mesh app). Stay within 10–15 feet of the node — 5 GHz weakens with distance but offers substantially better upload throughput.

Step 6: Change Wi-Fi Channels

Use WiFi Analyzer to spot crowded channels. In the mesh app or router settings, switch the 5 GHz band to channel 36 or the 2.4 GHz band to channel 1 to reduce neighboring network interference.

Step 7: Update Firmware

Check the mesh app for node firmware updates and install them. Reboot and retest upload speed.

Step 8: Check Your ISP Plan

Log into your ISP account and confirm your upload speed limit. If your plan offers less than 10 Mbps upload, calls will always struggle — an upgrade may be the only fix.

Prevention

Schedule important calls outside peak evening hours, close background apps on your call device, and review node placement and QoS settings monthly.
